Full Truck Load means: The entire loading space of a truck is exclusively available for a single shipment. No transshipment takes place; the goods remain on the same vehicle from loading to unloading. This results in the central advantage of a full truck load – the direct route: no detours via transshipment warehouses, no collective tours to multiple recipients.
This makes FTL faster and gentler than shared transports. Less handling means less risk for sensitive or high-value goods and predictable transit times, because only your deadline counts. Full Truck Load or Partial Load? FTL and LTL Compared
The opposite of a full truck load is a partial load – English Less Than Truck Load (LTL). With a partial load, your shipment only uses part of the loading space; the remaining space is shared with freight from other shippers. This reduces costs for small quantities but means collective trips, possible transshipments, and thus longer, less predictable transit times. A full truck load is worthwhile as soon as your shipment largely fills the loading space, is time-critical, or needs to be transported without transshipment. Full Truck Loads in Combined Transport
Road is the backbone of freight transport: Around 3.34 billion tons, and thus about 79 percent of all goods transported in Germany in 2024, traveled by road (Federal Statistical Office). For many shipments, direct truck transport is therefore the obvious choice.
For longer routes, however, a full truck load can also be handled via our network in combined transport – i.e., as a combination of rail and road, where the truck only handles the pre-carriage and on-carriage. According to the Federal Ministry of Transport , intermodal transport already accounts for around 36 percent of rail freight transport and is considered a growth area with high CO₂-saving potential.
